Meta Ads for B2C lead generation: reach where audiences spend their time

Meta Ads isn't a replacement for Google Ads, but the channel for reaching B2C audiences who don't actively search. When Meta pays off, which campaign types exist, and how it works with Google Ads.

What are Meta Ads?

Meta Ads is Meta's advertising platform covering Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network. What sets it apart is targeting by interests, behavior and demographics rather than search queries.

The core problem

Who doesn't search, Google doesn't reach

Google Ads catches active search. But someone who doesn't google a problem can't be reached through Google. Meta Ads reaches those people where they spend their time: in the Facebook and Instagram feed.

Google Ads

Active searchers

  • • Catches search intent
  • • High purchase intent per click
  • • Limited by search volume
  • • No reach beyond search

Meta Ads

Passive audiences

  • • Interrupts in the feed
  • • Builds demand that didn't exist yet
  • • Reach beyond search
  • • Lower purchase intent per click

The click price on Meta regularly sits between $0.50 and $2.00, well below Google. Cost-per-lead can run from a few dollars to about $30. But the low price says nothing about purchase intent. Pick by price alone and you compare two different jobs.

Campaign types

The Meta Ads campaign types at a glance

Meta offers much more than simple feed ads. Each campaign type has its place in the funnel, and the choice decides whether leads or purchases arrive.

Image and video ads in the feed

Classic ads in the Facebook and Instagram feed. The standard for reach and awareness.

Carousel Ads

Multiple cards in one ad, for products, steps or offers. Useful when several aspects need to be shown.

Collection Ads

A product catalog right inside the ad. The natural choice for e-commerce, because the path to purchase stays short.

Lead Ads

Forms that Meta pre-fills. Lower friction for the user, cleaner data. Often the most important lead format in B2C.

Messenger Ads

Ads that lead straight into a conversation. Works when personal contact is part of the buying journey.

Reels Ads

Ads between short videos. High reach, a fast-growing format, but it has to fit the brand.

Catalog Ads

Dynamic ads from the product feed. Retargeting viewers and interested contacts, automated.

Custom Audiences & Lookalikes

Re-engage existing contacts and find similar new customers. Broad reach turns into targeted contact.

Channel strategy

Google Ads and Meta Ads working together

No channel stands alone. The two complement each other when each gets a clear job. Use only one and a funnel stage stays empty.

01

Meta Ads

Builds demand with users who don't actively search. Interrupts in the Facebook and Instagram feed.

02

Google Ads

Catches active search once purchase intent forms. The primary channel for existing demand.

03

Retargeting bridge

Re-engage website visitors from Google on Meta, and the other way around.

04

Lookalikes

Build similar audiences from conversions and buyers, and reach grows cleanly.

05

Funnel control

Meta fills the top of the funnel, Google harvests lower down where search intent firms up.

This interplay needs cross-channel tracking. A contact often becomes aware on Meta and buys later through Google. Count only the last click and you systematically underestimate Meta. See also lead generation through Google and conversion tracking.

For whom

Which companies Meta Ads pays off for

Meta Ads pay off when your audience can be described by interests and behavior and doesn't necessarily search actively. That applies especially to:

  • E-commerce and D2C brands with a clear audience
  • Education providers and online courses with a broad audience
  • Consumer goods, lifestyle and leisure offers
  • Apps and mobile products with a download goal
  • Local services with a regional audience
  • Subscription and membership models

A simple test: can you describe your audience in one sentence by interests or behavior, rather than by specific search terms? Yes, then Meta is worth a serious look. No, and another channel is more economical. Where search volume exists, lead generation through Google stays the primary channel.

What's included

The building blocks of my Meta Ads management

Meta Ads only works reliably when campaign structure and tracking speak the same language as sales or the shop.

Audience structure

Interests, Custom Audiences and lookalikes are kept cleanly separate so reporting later says something useful.

Lead Ads vs. onsite forms

Pre-filled Meta forms or native forms on the website, depending on what serves lead quality better.

Pixel and Conversions API

Server-side measurement so Meta gets reliable data even when browser tracking fails. See also server-side tracking.

Cross-channel tracking

Clarity on which channel contributes what. Last-click isn't enough, because a contact often becomes aware on Meta and buys through Google.

A clear channel recommendation

An honest answer on when Meta makes sense and when it doesn't. A channel that doesn't fit the audience just burns budget.

Aligned with Google Ads

Meta isn't looked at in isolation but as part of a funnel strategy together with Google Ads.
